Paamul Caribbean Paradise, Riviera Maya Q. Roo México
Certified divers will find other opportunities unique to this region. In addition to excursions to the Great Maya Reef, marinas and dive shops offer diving trips to the subterranean rivers. Created thousands of years ago by rain water which filtered through the limestone surface, these rivers have become, with time, a subterranean paradise. Cavers and adults, with impressive rock formations, are found throughout these water filled tunnels.
Experts believe that during the Ice Age, when the water levels went down, rain filtered through the ground dragging minerals from the soil to create thousands of stalactites and stalagmites in the empty caverns. The melting of the poles caused water levels to rise, ultimately flooding these underground caverns and tunnels.
