Travelers Guide to Playa del Carmen

Playa del Carmen Q. Roo México

Shopping

On your visit to Playa del Carmen, You can't miss buying a souvenir to take back home and have a memory from this beautiful sea-port of the Mexican Caribbean. There are many stores where you can buy hand crafts made in different parts of the Mexican Republic.

You can also get, at truly low prices, clothes and shoes of magnificent quality. Lets us recommend the stores on Fifth Avenue, be sure not to miss the "Plaza Antigua", a very complete and special commercial center.

Quinta Avenida, the main shopping street in Playa del Carmen, is open exclusively for pedestrians. It can get crowded sometimes, like when a cruise boats stops between Playa and Cozumel and disgorges passengers for 4 hour shopping excursions. In the mornings and afternoons, there is hardly anybody on the street. There are dozens of travel agencies and a few dive shops.

The goods sold in Playa del Carmen's shops are from all over Mexico and the world. There are some swank galleries featuring artists from San Cristobal or Oaxaca. Others sell T-shirts and snow globes. An amusing trend right now is that 10+ stores are selling dresses and sarongs from Indonesia. If you want beach toys or floats, there is a little place on 10th street.

Keep a look out for Mayan Ear Candles and cute Mayan clothes for Barbie. On Quinta Avenida there are lovely things in La Hacienda, Casa del Sol, Joyas de la Tierra, and Selva y Mar.

Take a break from busy Quinta Avenida (5th Ave.). At the little plaza between 6th and 8th on 5th Ave. It has a very nice courtyard with trees and flowers and a little gazebo where you can sit and rest. There is an Italian restaurant (Café Mediteraneo) with a pleasant atmosphere and OK food. In the same area, there is a store selling wooden masks and paintings and artsy stuff from around Mexico. La Saponetta Magica sells cool funky soaps by the pound, bar, shampoo and conditioner, oils, etc.  a shop with really nice and original clothes from Dany Primus, things from Indonesia and a juice coffee bar in the garden. Very lovely and quiet atmosphere.
