Tourist Guide
LABNA
Labná, which means "Old or abandoned house", was thus named at the time of its discovery and exploration. Along with Uxmal, Sayil and Kabah, it forms the jewels of Northern Maya architecture and sculpture. This site has attracted world wide attention for its well-formed and finely ornamented arch, which must have been the entrance to an area dedicated to great celebrations.
Sculptures on the facade include representations of thatch-roof huts and stylized serpents. Some of the details have been lost, but the remaining architecture indicate the purity of the Puuc style, in which stone columns gives it its distinctive quality.
A ceremony center includes the Palacio (Palace) and the Mirador united by a "Sacbe" or stone causeway some 170 meters long. This site is 120 kilometers (74.4 miles) from Mérida with easy access by highway.
KABAH This is a monumental example of Puuc style architecture in which each stone element forms part of the total, linking man with his universe. Recent investigations indicate the zone was inhabited in 250 B.C. and reached its splendor in the 8th and 9th centuries of our era.
The trip from Mérida takes an hour, a pleasant drive though villages and haciendas. Kabah was linked with Uxmal by a stone causeway; it has two groups of buildings, the Codz Poop, decorated with 250 rain god masks, and the Palacio, which displays a dozen platforms and altars.

SAYIL
Sayil lies in a long valley of the hilly Puuc region toward the south of the peninsula. It flourished between 800-1000 B.C. approximately.
The most outstanding structure, for its dimensions and decoration, is the Palace. Built on a hill, it is composed of three levels and has more than 90 chambers with decoration of stone mosaic and masks on the outer facades.
