MAYAN RIVIERA

Tourist Guide

Boca Paila & Punta Allen

BOCA PAILA - On the southern end of the Riviera Maya exists a place from another time. The population has not reached these virtually deserted beaches. If you enjoy being away from the throngs and crowds of humanity, this is the place for you. Boca Paila and Punta Allen are located on a small peninsula inside the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, a large protected area of 1.3 million acres. Restrictions and regulations have protected this area from human intervention and therefore the environment is virtually untouched, allowing the visitor to have a very tangible contact with nature.

PUNTA ALLEN - You cannot pass by ¨Punta Allen on your way to anywhere. It is the end of a very bad road, and that is the beauty of it. When you get there you are in a place like no other. The Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve wraps around the place like a glove and the place is alive with birds, animals and the most beautiful Caribbean vistas imaginable. At dusk, large colonies of herons return to their nests in the lagoon's mangroves. They are very noisy, specially during winter when several thousand of them migrate to the region to mate.

It can take up to four hours to get to Punta Allen from Cancún and once you turn off the road, the paved road you drive slowly along the gorgeous Caribbean on a bad rural dirt road. The hard journey is worth it when you arrive. What a sight! The beach on one side and huge lagoons on the other. The jungle of the Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve is close at hand.

Paamul Caribbean Paradise, Riviera Maya Q. Roo México

The tiny fishing village is on the shores of Assention Bay, the second largest bay in the south of the state. Along with adjacent Saint's Spirit Bay. Punta Allen is Mexico's largest and most prolific lobster reserve, covering a total of 296 thousand acres. The government controls the season every year in order to give lobsters larvae enough time to mature for the international market.

Visitors can watch fishermen diving to catch lobster bare handed then have a couple grilled for dinner. Tourism is the primary income for the locals when lobster season is over at Punta Allen. The town is surrounded by cenotes and lagoons. Local fishermen can be hired to guide tours to all the interesting places. The water is shallow and the beaches are as well. The lagoon's have a good share of crocodiles and manatees, and taking a tour to look for the shy, endangered manatee is one of this region's rare treats.
